Until today, everything has been running rather smoothly. Most side effects have been surprisingly positive and I've been able to keep a good attitude in the face of any annoyances. But today put the "challenge" back in Veggie Challenge. I was in a moment where I was in a rush and had a bad case of hunger. I ran into, of all places, a local organic food store and looked for some portable munchies. I had a craving for a sandwich, but every single one of them had some sort of milk ingredient or eggs, or something. I missed my bus and had to settled on samosas, which are great don't get me wrong, but not what I wanted...And then I get to the volunteer centre and have to go back out into the cold to get soy milk to have some much needed coffee.
Nobody's fault but my own and it was probably just a bad day, but it was all quite aggravated by dietary constraints none the less.
Tomorrow I'll make some of my famous baked tofu sandwiches and all will be ok...
Right?

Reading everyone else's blogs I realize there is a perverse advantage to the 100 km diet I had not realized relative to your challenges ... all the label reading ... For me, whatever it is, I can't have it!
OK, sort of kidding. I check the bags of apples for the source, and am having to do a lot more than label reading to track stuff down, but that triggers the notion of the piggy back strategy to major lifestyle changes:
viz, find a partner who is already living the alternative and live with them for a year or two, learning from their experience ;-)
OK, that might even be worse.
Congrats to all as we near the 1/2 way point.
Hey Denise,
Something I have only learned recently about tofu. It seems this great friend of ours and other soy derived foods aren't so great.
Here's a great site the list 10 facts about tofu and other soy products:
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/10-things-to-know-about-tofu/
Seems that Tempeh might be better and stay away from Soybean oil! And black beans are actually fermented soy beans?!?!
Uhhmmmm, Carol .... this list doesn't actually say anything bad about tofu.
It does say the whole bean is more nutritious; true, and there are some great recipes ...
It does say tempeh is even more nutritious; also true, and I think Noble Bean Tempeh from out Lanark way is excellent, but they go in different recipes.
He does say black beans are fermented soy beans; true, and he recommends them highly as a healthy food.
All in all the only things he slams is the highly refined soy oil and the over sweetened soy milk (I agree), and he seems to have issues with the flavour of tofu (and seems to have only tried one texture, not to mention type ... that boy needs a trip to China).
So, really this article points out that tofu is not a miracle (nothing is), merely very good ...
